How to make flower food.
The best flower food comes in sachets with your flowers but you can also make your own.
•One liter of fresh water
•1 tablespoon of sugar
•1 teaspoon of something sour, lemon juice or vinegar
•Mix well, add your 'just cut' flowers and enjoy their beauty even longer
Standard Flower Care : Looking after your fresh flowers
•Start with a clean vase filled with fresh water and a package of flower preservative. Avoid using softened water.
•Remove all leaves that will be below the water line. This will stop the foliage from decaying and will help to keep the water cleaner.
•Hold flowers under water running water or in a sink and cut an inch off the stems with a sharp knife or shear. Do not use paper scissors, they will pinch the stems of the flowers and water will not be able to travel correctly up the stems.
•Immediately place the fresh cut flowers in the vase. Remember the 5 second rule: cut and get the flowers into the water within 5 seconds. It is important not to let the fresh cut stems dry out.
•Flowers will live longer in a cool place, away from direct sunlight, heat and drafts. Also, do not store flowers with fruit. They produce ethylene which causes flowers to wilt.
•Change the water and flower food every other day
•Enjoy!
If a rose should wilt prematurely.
To revive the rose, re-cut the stem an inch or so from the bottom or above any damaged area and then submerge the entire rose in a basin or shallow pan of warm water (about 100°F or 37°C). Be sure the stem is straightened out, and that the end of the stem stays submerged. It will usually revive within an hour or so, and can be replaced in the arrangement.
